It all started with their patti telling Sidharth/Nikhil that Lord Krishna was coming home to San Ramon for Krishnajayanthi. To give the theatrics a visual touch, and to make the proceedings child-participatory, their mom asked the boys to soak their feet in rice flour solution, and walk around,so as to leave footprints of the Krishna walking up to their door.
Nikhil ran up the doorfront, chanting,Krishna coming, Krishna coming, with ISKCONist fervour. Meera's idea was such a big hit that her children went up and down their door-front, doing re-takes of the soaked-foot routine. The resulting mess was evident from the footprints. And Sidharth,as chief bell-ringer,rang in Lord Krishna into the puja room as well.
As rituals got under way the focus of the boys turned to the eats on offer. And they couldn't wait to have their patti do mangalarthi.
After Krishnajayanti puja,at the dining table we talked about Krishna. Sidharth wanted to know what car did Krishna drive.
Another leading question: Why did Sudama live in a cave near Gaya, Bihar? In his reckoning, caves are only for wild animals. Sidharth isn't the one who would let you off, without you answering his questions. I tell him that in Sudama's times they didn't have houses, as he knew them.
Couldn't he live in a castle, as his friend Krisha did? I tell him Sudama had no money.
Sidharth: "Why? Didn't Sudama go to work?". Sidharth knows enough to realise that people get money if they go to work - making burrito, delivering pizza, or checking e-mail (that is what he thinks he daddy does for a living).
Sidharth believes that people who don't go to work got money from mom or daddy (as he did, for his piggybank). And Where were Sudama's mommy and daddy? Sidharth's line of questioning was getting out of my depth. I put an end to our chat, assuring Sidharth that Sudama did get money from Krishna, who had lot of it and shared it with friends.
