Reading about school girls in the US sacrificing their locks to raise money for children's cancer research I recall what Geetha (Annakutty mama's daughter-in-law) told me when we visited her familly in Edison, New Jersey, last year. Both her daughters - Anjana,14, and Anushree,12 - came home from school one day with their locks cut short, said Geetha. Before she could give them a mouthful, the girls deadpaned, "Relax mom, we gave it to raise funds for cancer research".Geetha's Sreedharan's anger turned into pride; and she gave both girls a hug for their sense of sacrifice.
Recounting this incident Geetha said both girls had long and flowing locks that ran right down their backs. She said she would send us a photo of the girls, taken with their flowing locks. We are awaiting the picture, Geetha. Meanwhile, this picture of the mother and her girls was taken during our visit to their place.I have problem figuring out Anu from Anjana.
A recent media report says that the hair-for-cancer fund-raiser - St. Baldrick's Foundation - started 10 years ago as a challenge among three friends and replicated around the country. Since the foundation's inception, 72,000 people have had their heads shaved, raising $50 million.
